Mel Gregorace is an unsung hero when it comes to Thorough Care SA.
Gregorace has been a key component in the growth of Thorough Care SA, which focus on thoroughbreds before, during and after their racing careers.
“Initially I think it was back in 2019 I approached Thorough Care SA off my own back,’’ Gregorace said.
“I could see there was a gap in the equestrian community when it came to ex-racehorses in South Australia, and I thought it was an area that needed to move forward and grow.
“I became a bit of a bridge between Racing SA and the equestrian industry helping co-ordinate events and clinics, it’s something I was really passionate about,’’ she said.
Gregorace said seeing first-hand the growth in awareness of the work Thorough Care SA is doing within the horse community was pleasing to see.
“Thorough Care SA’s footprint throughout the equestrian industry is huge now,’’ Gregorace said.
“Everyone is on board, it’s really gained momentum which is great.
“And Thorough Care Month is brilliant!
“I love seeing all the different stories about ex-racehorses and their new lives after racing… And people’s passion for their horses is something we all love to see,’’ she said.
Racing SA Industry Operations Manager and former Racing SA Equine Welfare Officer John Cornell said Gregorace had been crucial in the growth and awareness in the horse welfare arm of Racing SA.
“Mel has been an integral part of the Thorough Care SA story since its inception,’’ Cornell said.
“She has volunteered her time to a number of our incentives, has been the contact with the sponsorship of the thoroughbred classes at the agricultural shows and has help put together several clinics that Thorough Care SA has run.
“She is a valued member of our team and has given us hours of her time with her passion for Bred to Race Thoroughbreds
“Her work behind the scenes has been huge for the continual growth of Thorough Care SA and we’re lucky to have people like Mel helping,’’ he said.
