Apprentices Attend AAMI Stadium,
Up Close and Personal with the Crows

In 2008, apprentice jockeys in South Australia are given some unique and exciting opportunities! After just returning from AAMI stadium with the students of the Academy it is not only terrific to see how such a cutting edge club, like the Adelaide Crows runs their day to day operation, but how the apprentices absorbed so much information in a bid to further their careers and improve themselves.

The afternoon consisted of a tour with head trainer Vinnie Del Bono, who gave a detailed tour of the all the rooms ranging from the common room, pool, massage room maintenance room and weights room. In a surprise for all the girls, nearly the whole team was there working out, needless to say all the female apprentices were eagerly standing up the front taking in the view!

By the look on everyone's faces, all were very appreciative to have been able to experience the culture and facilities of the club but also gained a greater understanding of the professionalism and workings of an AFL club. Small comments stood out, like using an incredible $40,000 a year worth of tape to strap up ankles, wrists and shoulders!

The apprentices got a taste at what greets a newcomer to the club, in understanding anatomy of the human body, the benefits of stretching and strengthening core stability.

The most insightful part of the tour included a pep talk by six times Olympic Cycling Coach and now Neil Craig's right hand man, Charlie Walsh. Every apprentice was glued to every word that Charlie spoke. His message, that fearlessness and personal attitude underpins success. He got the point across that confidence comes from belief in yourself, and that is created by challenging your mind. It hit home with the apprentices, that you make the choices in life and must make a decision. Charlie's lecture was directed and applicable to their careers and that all achieving sports people don't sacrifice, they make positive decisions.

The time spent at AMMI stadium amongst such elite athletes and surrounds is something that every apprentice enjoyed and learnt the potential they have to become a true professional in careers as a jockey. A huge thank you must go to Adelaide Football Club, as it was a tremendous privilege to go and experience, the culture and workings of such a professional enterprise.
