Port Augusta
Port Augusta is situated at the head of the Spencer Gulf and is the apex of the triangle formed by the three Northern cities of Port Pirie, Port Augusta and Whyalla. The racecourse itself is situated 6km South East of the main city centre.
The racetrack is a sand track that is comprised of three different grades of sand with either oil or water used as a binding agent. The course itself is 2,100 metres in circumference and has a 400 metre long chute that joins the course proper at the 1,200 metre start.
The Port Augusta Racing Club was formed in late 1881, and apart from during the two world wars, has been operational ever since.
Prior to the revamp of the track in 1990, considerable capital works were undertaken with upgrade of the bar beneath the grandstand and the administration/jockeys rooms, which were industry funded. Also industry funded was a 104-horse stall, however, the Port Augusta racing fraternity provided the labour for this project.
The Club aims to target the Upper Spencer Gulf region comprising of Port Pirie, Port Augusta, Whyalla and surrounding districts with a view of creating a racing and entertainment environment which will attract additional patrons and in turn increased sponsorship.
