History

The history of racing in the Clare area goes back to the early 1880's, and involved a racemeeting annually on New Year's Day on a number of local properties until the Clare Racing Club Ltd., formed in 1889, was able to acquire a lease on the site of the present racecourse. This "once-a-year" event continued (broken only by racing bans during the World Wars) until the 1950's when the Club was finally able to negotiate racedates increases. Over the years since, these meetings have grown to their present level of 4. Throughout the 120-year history of the Club, there is a long list of local racing devotees who gave up thousands of hours of their time in serving on the Club committee for terms unheard of today.

The clubs vision is to ensure long-term sustainable growth in the participation and interest in thoroughbred racing by the residents of South Australia's Mid North region, by providing live and exciting entertainment that appeals to the competitive and sporting nature of rural South Australians.

The Area

Geographics :
The town of Clare is situated at the narrowing northern end of a valley named after the town and is approx. 140 kilometres by road, north of the Adelaide GPO. The western half of the racecourse property is located on the side of a hill with its appointments on the upper side of that hill, thereby providing a natural platform for the "live" viewing of racing on a course that is laid out north/south.

Demographics :
Clare is the sole significantly large town (by SA standards) within the Clare & Gilbert Valleys Council boundaries, which encompasses an area of approx. 390 square kilometres carrying a population of 8350. It, along with 12 smaller townships and settlements, carry the bulk of the population in a region largely economically dependent upon and agricultural and viticultural pursuits. 28% of the residents are under the age of 20, while 30 to 50 year olds account for a like number. Retirees (65 years plus) total 1330 (16%).
