SA's Top Five Spring Contenders

With the warmer months fast approaching, Lincoln Moore has his eye on five SA horses set to make a splash this Spring.

BEHEMOTH

The giant from Goolwa chases a second successive win in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday. The David Jolly-trained gelding looks to have returned to his best after claiming back-to-back Spring Stakes wins in Adelaide first-up from a spell. He has another Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes on his radar, while connections have also thrown in a sneaky Cox Plate nomination after running third in the All-Star Mile at Moonee Valley earlier in the year.

IRONCLAD

Exciting Will Clarken-trained import who resumes in the Leon Macdonald (Penny Edition) Stakes at Morphettville on Saturday with Callan Murray in the saddle. Unbeaten in four starts for Clarken which includes wins in the C S Hayes in Adelaide and Golden Mile at Bendigo before a break, he’s nominated for the big three – Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup.

INSTANT CELEBRITY

The Group 1 TAB Classic (Sangster Stakes) winner kicks off her spring campaign at Caulfield this weekend after running second behind Savatoxl in the Group 1 Goodwood in Adelaide back in May. She’s being targeted towards the rich $7.5m Golden Eagle (1500m) at Rosehill on October 30, while the recently launched $2m The Invitation, a 1400m race for fillies and mares run two weeks earlier at Randwick, looms as an ideal lead-up.

BEAU ROSSA

Another Will Clarken-trained galloper who won the Listed Lightning Stakes at the end of his 3yo season before he was first past the post but relegated to second spot behind Behemoth in the Spring Stakes. He is a Memsie Stakes and Leon Macdonald Stakes acceptor this weekend and looks an ideal horse for the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield in three weeks’ time under handicap conditions.

GYTRASH

Star SA sprinter Gytrash is chasing redemption in the $15m Everest (1200m) in Sydney after running third behind Classique Legend in 2020. Coming off a luckless hit and run Queensland campaign, Gytrash is reportedly ticking all the right boxes ahead of his first-up mission in the Group 2 The Shorts (1100m) at Randwick on September 19.
