Racing club backs hay run initiative

The Mount Gambier Racing Club has thrown its support behind the current hay run initiative, providing 15 bales of lucerne hay to assist those affected by the Avenue Range fire.

The hay was sourced from the centre of the racecourse, which is regularly baled to support the club’s fundraising effort, with support from Hancock Contracting and club committee member John Fartch.

Cartage contractor Robert Creek assisted the club to support the initiative by providing transport and labour free of charge, enabling the hay to be delivered to the affected areas.

“This is one of a few examples of how our club endeavours to give back to the local community,” said Mount Gambier Racing Club president John O’Connor.

“Our committee appreciates this is just a small part of a much larger community effort…”

The Hay Run sprung to life just days after the Lucindale and Avenue Range communities were left devastated by the 14,000-plus hectare blaze, which led to substantial livestock and infrastructure losses.

It soon snowballed into one the state’s biggest ever collective hay runs, involving nearly 70 trucks, coming from across the state and even Victoria’s Wimmera district.
