Dream believers loving the info flow

A free flow of information – plus a talented horse – has helped the Dare to Dream owners of She’s Krupt enjoy the ride over the past 12 months.

The Ryan Balfour-trained mare is racing at Morphettville tomorrow, and already has a win and three placings from her six starts.

The four-year-old is part of Thoroughbred Racing South Australia’s (TRSA) Dare To Dream initiative, launched late last year to give 25 competition winners a chance to experience racehorse ownership via a share in two horses for themselves and nine friends.

Adelaide man and first-time owner Mark St Hill was among the winners and finally got to watch She’s Krupt run for the first time last weekend.

“It’s definitely been fun and it’s hard to believe that we’re already 12 months in,” Mark said.

“Last Saturday was really exciting. We got to go to the owners’ deck and owners’ bar, we saw Ryan in there and got to talk to him briefly before the run. That was cool.”

Mark said his syndicate members had particularly appreciated the constant flow of information from the stable.

“We get regular updates from the stables – they come to me and I send them onto the group,” he said.

“Ryan and the other owners had a social club function at The Highway, going back a couple of months ago, and there was six of us who went along to that.

“That was a good night. They got up and spoke a bit about what was happening at the stable, what horses were coming through, and made a bit of a social event of it.”

While She’s Krupt finished fifth last Saturday, the mare brought up her maiden victory at Balaklava recently, prompting celebrations from within Mark’s The Fortunate Ten syndicate.

“We were pretty excited,” Mark said.

“Everyone was cheering. A few were watching it at the pub, a few at their workplace, a few at home.

“There were emails and messages going around when she won.

“I think one of the guys has bought an official photograph of the win, so he can put it up on his wall as a memory.”

Mark says the concept has ignited an interest among at least some of the syndicate members to continue their involvement in the sport after their two-year Dare To Dream experience ends.

“We’ve got a mixture of people who have probably never watched a race or who have gone to the races, plus some are probably a bit more involved than myself,” he said.

“They might go to their local pub most Saturdays, have a punt and watch the racing.

“But I’m definitely more aware of the industry now than I was previously, and I know there’s at least a few in the syndicate who have expressed an interest to buy into She’s Krupt or another horse at the end of the two years.”

Sarah Barnes, of the Barnesy’s Pony of Dreams syndicate, admits to being “an extreme novice” prior to winning the competition, but says the communication has also been a welcome part of the experience.

“We’re always getting constant emails, letting us know how she’s doing,” she said.

“I’m really hoping to attend the races when she’s running. It would be an experience.”
