Business SA report highlights racing’s role in COVID-19 economic recovery

The state’s peak business body has underlined the importance of thoroughbred racing to South Australia – and its role in helping SA recover from the economic impacts of coronavirus.

Released this week, Business SA’s 13-point list of recommendations – which has been presented to the State Government – aims to help business navigate a post-coronavirus path and includes specific mention of thoroughbred racing.

One of Business SA’s recommendations calls for the development of a multi-faceted tourism campaign, including “a focus on major leisure and business events, from horse races to conferences…”

The acknowledgement of the racing industry has been welcomed by Thoroughbred Racing South Australia’s CEO Nick Redin.

“It’s important that Business SA has recognised thoroughbred racing’s integral role in South Australia’s economy, supporting so many jobs across the state,” Mr Redin said.

Among its suite of suggested measures, the blueprint calls for tax relief for the hospitality sector and the instigation of a Made in SA campaign, aimed at stimulating a manufacturing-led economy.

The blueprint was prepared via a “virtual summit” involving more than 50 business leaders.
