SA’s Black Type double

SA-trained horses landed a Group 1 and a Listed event either side of the SA/Victoria border on Saturday.

Gordon Richards’ stable star Gytrash upstaged his more fancied rivals to emphatically win the 1000m Black Caviar Lightning down the famous Flemington straight. Gytrash raced behind $16 million-earner Redzel, then blew past the star NSW sprinter to land the $750,000 classic, leaving horses like odds-on favourite Nature Strip and gun juvenile Loving Gaby in his wake.

Meanwhile at Morphettville, boutique Murray Bridge trainer Rob Wilkinson landed the biggest win of his career when in-form stayer Master Chum took out the $100,000 Listed Holdfast Insurance Birthday Cup over 2043 metres.

Ridden by Eran Boyd, Master Chum posted his third straight victory, after wins at Morphettville on December 28 and Murray Bridge on January 18.

Favourite Hasta La War lost no admirers in finishing second and appears to be a leading SA hope for the $400,000 TAB Adelaide Cup next month.
