Tasmanian Apprentice Teagan Voorham will kick off her three month South Australian Apprentice stint at Gawler on Wednesday, a track which has already brought her some success.
The 23-year-old has 671 career starts to her name for 60 wins and 152 placings and is currently the leading Tasmanian Apprentice with 24 wins this season.
Voorham has been race riding for two years but had been riding track work since she was in high school. While she has always loved riding and loved horses, she wasn’t always sure that a career in the saddle was for her.
“I’ve been riding horses since I was eight-years-old doing pony club and eventing and I also played polocrosse for six years.”
“I’m not really sure what got me into trackwork; it was just something I wanted to try and then it went from there and now I have the bug. I wasn’t sure at first if my apprenticeship was something I wanted to do but I eventually decided it was and signed up with Nigel Schuuring back in Tasmania.”
Voorham will be based with Morphettville trainer Chris Bieg throughout her three month stint and is set to ride three of his runners on Wednesday with Raheeba, Strategic Agenda and Unscopebale all set to line up at Gawler.
Of her chances, Strategic Agenda has one win and five placings from ten starts at the distance while Unscopeable has won at the track before.
A return to Gawler will bring back happy memories for Voorham who won her SA debut race aboard Samantha Barr’s Ewan Mine in April last year in a heat of the National Apprentice Series and was mighty close to making it two from two aboard Grant Young’s Ilgattino in her second race that day.
The talented rider has a personal best four winners in a day and is undefeated in two rides on one of Tasmania’s best horses, I’m Wesley. Despite coming from no real racing background, she’s loving her life in the racing game and has even got her mum hooked on the sport.
“My biggest supporter would have to be my mum, she comes to every race meet back home and in doing so has learnt a lot too and even tells me what she thinks I may have done right or wrong!”
While she’s in SA she’s looking to make the most of her time here, learning from some of the state’s best and hopefully finding a few winners.
“I came over here as I have a full 3kg city claim that I wanted to utilise and just be a sponge really and learn as much as I can whilst I’m here! I’m excited to try and get a few city winners under my belt if possible and just learn heaps!”
