Logan’s Lady to continue Lincoln love affair

Lady Conquistador returns to the track where she claimed this month’s Port Lincoln Cup in an attempt to add another Eyre Peninsula feature to her CV, the Kimba Cup.

The Simon Drewitt trained mare has enjoyed a magnificent Port Lincoln season across 2018/19 where she has had four wins, two seconds and a sixth from her seven starts. Apprentice Sophie Logan has been aboard the four-year-old for three of her four wins this season including this month’s Port Lincoln Cup victory. On recent form it’s hard to go past the mare in this weekend’s feature but after her Port Lincoln Cup victory, she will have to carry 6kg more than she did a couple weeks back, which could make this race a wide open affair.

The rise in weight for Lady Conquistador greatly helps the Darryl Carrison trained Bramfield. She only just missed out by a nose in the Port Lincoln Cup and gets a 3kg weight swing in her favour on Sunday. She also gets the added benefit of having experienced jockey and Port Lincoln expert Todd Pannell aboard her in the Kimba Cup. She too has a great record at the track but the big question will be is how quickly she can recover after running on Monday’s Adelaide Cup Day program. She finished in sixth position, three lengths off the winner Lieder on Monday and if she recovers, that looks a great form race for Sunday’s Cup.

Four other runners on Sunday are coming out of the Port Lincoln Cup, led by the eleven-year-old Umaluka who was gallant in that race to run fifth after claiming February’s Lock Cup the start prior. He will need to produce another massive run to challenge the favourites but he’s a horse that just loves a Country Cup. Ceduna Cup winner Eye The World was disappointing last start in the Penong Cup running third behind Mr Jazz Man. Eran Boyd gets back on the gelding in his 90th career start and the two have combined well recently for two wins and two placings from their last six starts.

Scott Whittle’s Tommy Gun is coming into Sunday’s race in some fantastic form with three wins from his last four starts. His only miss came in February’s Kangaroo Island Cup but he bounced back over 1800m at Clare last start and the in-form Sairyn Fawke will take the ride once again the seven-year-old. The two have an amazing record with Fawke riding the horse nine times for three wins and they have never finished worse than fifth together.

Darryl Carrison’s second runner in the race, What a Shock, returns from Adelaide where he finished fifth behind Moghul Empire last weekend. It’s only his third start for Carrison and if he can bring the form he showed while he was racing in Melbourne he could be a nice chance on Sunday with the talented Jake Toeroek on board while Julie Branford’s Emoji has been racing in good form but just can find the post first. His chances of finding that rare win will improve with the booking of the state’s leading jockey Raquel Clark.
