King Kenny looks to continue his reign in Port Lincoln

Coming off a double last Friday at Port Lincoln, Hong Kong apprentice Kenny Lau returns to the same track on Sunday with a book of six rides.

The 20 year-old who is apprenticed to Richard Jolly & Chantelle Jolly is a popular figure in the jockey’s rooms and is a guy who always has a smile on his face.

Lau has registered 24 career wins in his short career and currently sits in 13th spot on the South Australian Jockey Premiership this season with eleven wins from 90 starts. This season he has a very respectable 12.2% winning strike rate which is currently the sixth best in the state.

Last time at the track he rode the Brian Clarke trained Mackie to victory along with Ryan Dawson’s Vintage Grove who he has built quite a rapport with. The pair have combined for two wins and a second in their last three starts.

In his six rides on Sunday, three will be for local trainer Annette Harder with rides aboard Hardashian, Tornado Blue and Heza Hussler.

It’s been a good week for Lau, after recording his Port Lincoln double last Friday he had another good win on the Ken Sweeney trained Anamnesis at Gawler on Wednesday. The well backed gelding was given a great steer by Lau on a track that favoured the on-pacers and Lau was able to ease out Anamesis from third spot at the 400m for a comfortable 1.3 length win.

With all eyes on Hong Kong this week for their world famous International Races program, it’s a place Lau would love to get back to and one day be riding against the best in the world.

Lau is currently under the watchful eye of Apprentice Training Supervisor, Briony Moore who believes that he will be one to watch over the upcoming months.

“Kenny is a natural lightweight but his biggest attribute is he still has the strength to fight it out in the finish. He’s progressing quickly and with his 3kg claim we are bound to see a lot more from him over the busy summer period.”

So whether you’re on track or watching from the comfort of your lounge room this week, keep an eye on Kenny this weekend.
