Saturday Wrap - Chairman's Stakes Day

Who looked good on Saturday and who is likely to improve over the next three weeks during the Adelaide Festival of Racing?

Group 3 Breeders’ Stakes

Talented filly, Broadband from the Phillip Stokes stable recorded her first career win in the Group 3 Breeders’ Stakes on Saturday.

Broadband jumped well from the wide barrier to take the lead early in the race and was never headed again. At the turn some challengers loomed up behind her but at the 200m jockey Noel Callow called upon the filly and she kicked away to record a very impressive 3.6 length win.

The favourite Time Awaits got going late for Damien Thornton but was unable to catch the speedy filly as she had to settle for second while interstate visitor Faith in Hand flew home late just to miss third place and looks like she may be one to follow in the future.

Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes

An incredibly gutsy win from Waging War capped off a great day’s racing as trainer Leon Macdonald picked up his fourth career win in the Chairman’s Stakes.

Waging War sat wide for the basically the whole 2000m trip but had enough in the tank to kick on in the straight to hold off the fast finishing Grand Chancellor. The Macdonald and & Gluyas camp will be hoping that Waging War can emulate the success of Rebel Raider in 2009 when he completed the Chairman’s – Derby double with Clare Lindop aboard.

Phillip Stokes almost took out two Group races on the day with Grand Chancellor who came flying home late to pinch second ahead of Morvada who looked like a winning chance inside the final 200m but Waging War finished that bit stronger than the both of them.

Race favourite Netherfield ran on after being held up at the 200m and looks as if the extra distance in the UBET SA Derby will suit while outsider Adatto also ran on late to finish sixth.

Listed Nitschke Stakes

An aggressive ride from Damien Thornton worked a treat as Fox Hall took out the Listed Nitschke Stakes for Tony McEvoy.

Fox Hall looked in a spot of trouble at the turn as he worked hard to keep up with the leader Plenty To Like but produced a strong run and saw him take the lead at the 300m and record a one length victory over the fast finishing pair in Cappadocia and Weather Channel.

Fox Hall looks set to tackle the Listed Adelaide Guineas while both placegetters look like ones to follow after their runs. All three horses will be exempt from the ballot for the Guineas and look to be good chances in that race on 20 May.

Listed City of Adelaide Handicap

Todd Pannell’s amazing April continued on Saturday as he notched up his third Listed winner for the month and his second on Riziz. Riziz sat just off the speed and peeled out in a perfect spot at the turn and took control in the straight holding out Victory Downs and the fast finishing Rocket Commander.

Rocket Commander who is back in the care of Wayne Francis & Glen Kent looks to be heading to this weekend’s Queen of the South Stakes where she will take on her own sex and looks a good chance on Saturday’s run.

Well backed favourite Kenjorwood was blocked for a run in the home straight but when jockey Damian Lane was able to pick a gap he ran on very strongly to just miss out on the placings.
