The Listed Holdfast Insurance Birthday Cup has long been one of the key lead up races for the UBET Adelaide Cup.
The last horse to complete the Birthday Cup/Adelaide Cup double was the Lloyd Kennewell trained Rialya in 2012. Rialya won the Birthday Cup at $6.50 and then the Adelaide Cup at $11.
Last year’s Birthday Cup winner, Go Dreaming went on to run 9th in the Adelaide Cup, while four other stayers who ran in the Birthday Cup went on to run in the Adelaide Cup including Jim’s Journey who ran fourth in the big race.
Irish apprentice Emily Finnegan is in great form in the Adelaide Metropolitan area riding at a strike rate of 24.7%, while visiting jockey Jake Duffy had two wins from two rides at Morphettville last weekend. Goldstream jockey, Dean Yendall has ridden at a 42.9% strike rate at Morphettville this season.
Four last start winners line up in this race including the Darren Weir trained Goldstream while the Letmedowngently from the Sue Jaensch yard is looking for her fourth win on the trot.
Jim’s Journey, Letmedowngently, Mail it In, Ustinov’s Fury and Flow Meter have all come through the Rain Lover, which was run a fortnight ago at Morphettville over 1800. All five ran in the top five with Letmedowngently pipping Mail it In by 0.1L.
Goldstream is the $3 favourite on UBET but favourites have not had much success in the race over the last five years, with Pelicano the only favourite to win in 2013.
The average winning price over the last five years is $19.76, with Go Dreaming winning last year's edition at a juicy $56.80.
